Lafayette Square

Located just one mile south of downtown St. Louis, Lafayette Square is a dynamic and thriving area of the city where the elegance of the city’s grand Victorian era has been revived.

Victorian mansions, townhouses and row houses display architectural styles from the Civil War through the turn of the century.  Many Lafayette Square homes contain fine examples of Victorian architecture including French Second Empire, Federal, and Romanesque Revival. Nearly all of the 375 historic Lafayette Square homes have been restored to their original beauty.  This collection of grandiose historic homes make the Lafayette Square Walking Tour a necessity.

Within walking distance to most Lafayette Square homes are dozens of restaurants and small businesses.  Stroll down the street to pick up coffee at Park Avenue or brunch from Squires.  Check out the local wine shop 33, craft brewery Square One, or Bailey’s Chocolate Bar for the ‘Best Chocolate Martini’ in St. Louis, according to the Riverfront Times.  Try Vin de Set for elegant French dining that offers rooftop views of St. Louis city or PW Pizza, considered one of the cities best.

Lafayette Park marks the center of the Square.  This 30 acre park is the oldest St. Louis city park and the first park west of the Mississippi River.   Surrounded by original wrought-iron fence the Park houses a duck pond, gazebos and lush landscaping.   Walkers and joggers abound mornings and evenings while summer nights include family movies and concert series.

In 1973 the U.S. Congress placed Lafayette Square on the National Register of Historic Places so the neighborhood will be around for future generations to see and enjoy.
